Sinopsis
This workshop is an introduction to a mode of mediated embodied interaction with and through avatars created for Senses Places by collaborator Todd Cochrane. Isabel Valverde will guide the participants in a physical-virtual somatic experience (sensing the body internally) interacting with ourselves, our and others' avatars, and place(s), while experimenting with the Webcam interface. The somatics-technological performance approach adapts the interface and device to the subjects’ bodies perceptive e cognitive-motor abilities. We will learn how to integrate our animations in the HUD object created, and dance together with the avatars.
Looking for a true amplification of our embodied capacities through interactivity, the practice is based on a experimental creative approach to dance-technology in development by the project Senses Places, in a international collaboration between artistic and technological partners/nodes. The hybrid trans-cultural approach to movement and dance improvisation emphasizes somatic/kinaesthetic experimental genres, including, Performance Art, Contact Improvisation and Butoh dance, towards reversing the generalized body instrumentalization and substitution by virtual characters in videogames and MUVEs.
In the interweaving of physical-virtual embodied realities and cultures Senses Places designs and choreographs creative experiences for inclusive and accessible expression and communication for a networked environment. For its benefits and accessibility it is applicable to a large number of educational contexts, and everyone playing and working on VR.

The software for network communication via Web 2.0 with Second Life (platform and avatars), include:
  • Livestream video broadcast – physical body-video image interaction
  • Web Camera + Flash (by Todd Cochrane) – physical body movement-avatar interaction
  • Wii mote (Nitendo®) + DarwiinRemote (by Todd Cochrane) - physical body movement in space-avatar movement in space interaction (tentatively)

Senses Places
Mixed reality participatory performance

Senses Places is a collaborative performance environment for both physical and avatar participants/performers, gathering at a shared virtual place from nodes throughout the world. It follows a score shared with the audience/participant members, along with the interactive interfaces with instructions to connect through them. Physical, image, avatar, and places, are instantiations of a conjoint corporealized reality. We want to witness the emergent empathic dynamics out of the kinesthetic movement and synesthetic intertwining of cultures, subjectivities, disciplines, domains, worlds within embodied senses and places.
Dispersed throughout 2 to 4 physical public venues, we will tentatively be in Portugal, Japan, NewFound Land and Brazil, and at Second Life's site connecting with/through video streams, avatars and places.

Physical mixed-reality location:
U. Aberta, Palácio Ceia, Lisbon
